Written Summary:

In this video, Dr. Joseph Estwanik, M.D. and Master Bobby Taboada, provide the viewer with a good aerobic boxing program to follow. What I found very pleasing was the medical perspective used in putting this program together. Dr. Estwanik credentials are AMAZING. As an orthopaedic sports medicine specialist, not only has he been a ring side doctor on many an event you've heard of (UFC included), but quite a few you many not have. And if that weren't impressive by itself, he's also a former weight lifter, body builder, and martial artist too. The Boxergenics program describes itself as, " The F-I-R-S-T medically designed boxing aerobic workout to promote overall fitness, symmetry, confidence, and well-being." In my opinion, that's exactly what they deliver. For $19.95 you're given what appears to be a safe, yet challenging, workout routine, that can be followed everyday.

The video starts with a brief intro and then goes into a 20 minute warm-up that includes various exercises and stretches. After that, the reader is shown a couple of the basic punches. Next, the punches are put together with some footwork, to give the viewer a nice little 20-30 minute workout routine to follow.

The video is shot in Master Irwin Carmichael's dojo. There are about 12 people in the room, from a variety of backgrounds, all going through the program together. Out of the 12, there are several beginners, several intermediate, and several advanced persons following along. What I liked was the fact that no matter what each persons skill level was, each was getting one heck of a workout. At the end of the tape, during the credits, we get to hear who each person is, and a little about their background. Several were "advanced" black belts, and they had been been following along, punching hard, and at the end, were sweating and trying to catch their breath. Everyone got a good workout !

Not only would this be a good tape for many martial artists, but also for aerobic instructors, and significant others who don't want to put on a gi and go to the dojo with you. While watching this tape, I saw a number of interesting ways it could be used. This could also be a great tape to have around for those days you can't make it to the dojo.

Some advanced martial arts practitoneers might view this tape as "too basic a workout". But while watching it, I was intently focused on watching everyone in the room, their skill level, and the degree to which they were exerting themself. When combined with the footwork, I feel most individuals could get a great workout by following this program. At $19.95, it's an excellent value.
