Written Summary:

This third tape in Mario Sperry’s 2nd series covers attacks from the open guard, half guard and the turtle position. World Martial Arts continues to bring us yet another very high quality video with a high price tag on the art of No Rules fighting . Again this tape is not loaded with techniques, I counted only 15. If your looking for a tape series that has a lot of moves then this is not the series for you however if your looking for good solid techniques that WILL work in a No Rules environment then this tape/series has a lot to offer. As in previous tapes all of the techniques are not shown just in isolation but as how they would most likely occur in a fight or no holds barred competition.

The first fifteen minutes of this video is dedicated to the open guard. Sperry explains that you are at a disadvantage if you are on the ground with the person in your open guard as they can throw punches from the top position which can be devastating. Sperry shows how you can reverse the position by trapping the person’s arm and leg and taking them down into a triangle choke or into a turnover. Also shown is how to take the person’s back from open guard. The next portion of the video is on the half guard. Sperry states that if you don’t want to get hit then don’t get into a fight. Makes sense to me. Some video’s or ads for these video’s give you the impression that they have some secret techniques which will enable you to easily destroy all of your opponents without so much as even a scratch. Not Sperry, he tells it like it is. In regards to the half guard he states that you are going to get hit when you try what he is showing but he further explains that you will get hit even worse if you do nothing. Sperry makes the comment, “ I’m a professional fighter I like it (getting hit), it is going to make me ugly.” Mario states that you want to give the person the opportunity to hit you which will allow you to escape. In this section Mario shows both a turnover and how to get the person’s back.

The last part of the tape is on the turtle position. Sperry explains that if you are fighting an inexperienced fighter who is in the turtle position he will just finish the person by taking his back. Some of the things covered are a very basic turnover where you grab the person’s opposite arm with both of your hands and pull towards your body to turn them over. Also shown is what to do when the person tries to block this turnover with their leg. Another basic turnover is shown using the half nelson with either one or two of your arms. Again this is basic material but good sound technique. Sperry also shows what to do when you find yourself in the turtle position and how to reverse this situation. Another excellent video.
