Written Summary:

How many times do I have to watch a video by Tony Blauer before he fails to impress me with his knowledge, physical ability, and most importantly, his ability to communicate. My only regret when I watch these videos is that I cannot train with him in person.

This video begins with a discussion of various grappling grips and their application when fighting on the ground. As with all of Mr. Blauer's material, he breaks everything down in exquisite detail so that it is understandable to even the most novice of students. This video is filled with good ideas on training and how to properly train with a partner so that both participants can gain maximum benefit from any training session, even though this particular video emphasizes stand up grappling. There is a terrific, detailed segment on a technique to defeat a suplex ( or a rear bear hug slam ) and the importance of gross motor skills over fine motor skills in a real fight. There is another great segment on defeating a choke with a duck-under and it's explained in such detail that even a rank beginner can gain benefit immediately from watching it. Defending against people attacking your legs is explained by Mr. Blauer in a way that is so simple and logical, yet I have never seen it explained AND demonstrated this effectively. This was brilliant. Any of you who have ever been dropped by BJJ guys going for your legs will see the wisdom of " maintaining the proper axis " and " correct foot placement " as explained on this video.

Mr. Blauer never stops teaching, not just on this video, but on all the others I have seen that are conducted in seminar format. He explains, he demonstrates, he corrects, and he encourages when necessary. Very unlike many seminars that I have personally attended by other well known martial artists. The video closes with Mr. Blauer giving some good advice on conditioned responses in fighting and in becoming obsessed with trying to learn too many moves ( the jigsaw puzzle analogy ) relative to what you need to know. The tape closes with several live grappling sparring sessions put on by some of Mr. Blauer's students.

Once again, Mr. Blauer has earned one of our highest grades. We're amazed each time we watch his videos at not only how thorough and informative they are, but how he consistently produces some of the best instructional tapes we've ever seen. Well done Mr. Blauer!
