Written Summary:

There is a disturbing trend in the martial arts today. Many so called “modern” martial artists have left their gi’s and black belts in the closet, donned t-shirts and blue jeans and begun calling themselves things like “eclectic martial artists “ and claiming to teach “ real self defense “. But what most of them are actually doing is teaching the same stuff they were teaching in the dojo but in a “dressed down “ mode to make it appear more modern or contemporary. Tony Blauer is one glaring EXCEPTION to this trend. No, he does not wear a gi and he does claim to teach “real self defense “. But in Blauer’s case, as on this excellent video, he delivers the goods like he has been doing for the last 10 years.

The essence of this video is that Blauer has taken grappling concepts and integrated them with a striker’s arsenal and a killer instinct mentality to create what Blauer refers to as “ground fighting “. Not grappling, but ground fighting. These concepts are what Blauer refers to as “cement friendly “. In other words, a lot of the material in the grappling arts can get a person seriously hurt when used in a street environment. Mr. Blauer has modified much of this material and put it into a framework that is much more street realistic. All of the grappling stuff is here but with the Blauer modifications intact, it begins to look quite like a different animal entirely. Yes, we have the usual mount, guard, cross mount, etc positions but they have been analyzed with a critical eye and evaluated to where fighting from each of these positions is more street effective. A lot more street effective in my opinion. If you took Judo or Brazilian Jujitsu and hot wired it with the mentality of an alley cat street fighter, then that should give you some idea of what is on this video.

As we have said before, we do not routinely give out grades higher than 95. But Mr. Blauer is consistently the exception to this rule. I am continually amazed at the depth and quality of the information presented on his videos. As you may have guessed, we would recommend this video to anyone, regardless of martial arts background or experience. If you are an instructor in one of the grappling arts, then this video is an absolute must for you. Particularly if you are teaching your students to take people to the ground in a street situation. Tony, thanks again for a terrific contribution to the martial arts community.
